What is Answer Capsule?
An Answer Capsule is a self-contained block of content, usually the opening sentences of a page or section, that states a complete, quotable answer to a single question, formatted so an AI system can lift it directly into a generated response without needing the surrounding context.
How it works
AI systems retrieve and extract passages, not whole pages, and they lean heavily on the top of a document. In rawmktg's analysis of cited pages, roughly 55% of citations came from the first 30% of the page. An Answer Capsule exploits this by front-loading a clean, extractable answer.
The format is strict: one question, one complete answer, no dependency on earlier text, no marketing preamble. The shape is the term, its category, and what it does. If a reader, or a model, can copy the first sentence and have it stand on its own, it is a capsule. If it needs the next paragraph to make sense, it is not.
Answer Capsule vs meta description
A meta description summarises a page to earn a click from a search snippet. An Answer Capsule is the answer itself, written to be extracted and quoted verbatim inside an AI-generated response rather than to entice a click.
Why it matters for B2B
It is the smallest unit of GEO. A page can have perfect schema and strong authority and still go uncited if the answer is buried three paragraphs down. The capsule is what gets pulled.
A capsule: "A prompt portfolio is a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts a brand runs across AI engines on a cadence to measure citation visibility."
Not a capsule: "In this guide we will explore why measurement matters and, eventually, get to what a prompt portfolio is." The first stands alone and can be quoted verbatim; the second cannot.
