What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results, answering a query directly and citing a small set of sources instead of only listing ranked links.

How it works

Google generates the overview by retrieving and synthesising content from pages it trusts, then names a few of them as sources. Appearing as one of those sources puts a brand above the traditional results, often before the user scrolls at all.

Inclusion leans heavily on existing trust. In rawmktg's analysis, 96% of AI Overview citations go to sources Google already trusts on E-E-A-T grounds, which means classic search authority is largely a prerequisite for being cited here.

AI Overviews vs featured snippets

A featured snippet lifts one passage verbatim from a single ranking page. An AI Overview synthesises an answer from multiple sources and cites several of them. The snippet rewards one well-formatted passage; the overview rewards being one of the trusted sources the model draws on.

Why it matters for B2B

AI Overviews sit at the top of the page for a growing share of informational B2B queries, and they often answer the question without a click. Being cited inside them is one of the few ways to keep visibility as zero-click results expand.

Common mistake

Treating AI Overviews as a new channel you can win on formatting alone. Because 96% of citations go to sources Google already trusts on E-E-A-T grounds, a page with no classic search authority almost never appears. The overview is won upstream, by earning trust, not by restructuring a single page.
